My name is Laura S and I still remember when I received L.M.Montgomery’s, Emily of New Moon from the Scholastic Book Club. Everything about reading thrilled me: from the glossy new covers, to the excuse to escape from the real world, to the many characters I met along the way. My favourite books expanded and grew, and created spaces for me to understand the shifting world around me. I read Anna Karenina while backpacking in India, I went throughGone with the Wind after my mom’s diagnosis, The Neverending Story kept me company in my awkward teen phase, and Jane Eyre gave me a thirst for Classics.
Women from Away is a space to share love of reading with other women who also fell in love with books amidst their own journeys.
Aside from reading, I’m a singer/songwriter and work in the social work/justice field. I feel very busy most days, and reading grounds me. Thanks to Women from Away for helping me explore new genres and ways of looking at literature!
